Mr. Harry Wu is known for his work to expose the use of prison labor in China. He served part of his 19-year prison term for exposing the prison labor camps. Mr. Wu was arrested when he tried to enter China on June 19, 1995, to document the use of prison labor. He was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in jail, but was deported by the Chinese government a day later. On April 15, he was refused to enter Hon Kong and sent back to the United States after detaining him overnight at the airport. The Hong Kong government issued a statement that in allowing entry to Hong Kong, immigration officials take "into consideration a range of factors, including the overall interest of Hong Kong."
