Reported earlier, Ms. Yukan Jia, 12-year-old Chinese, disappearing from her youth tour group to Space Camp in Alabama was found safe at her uncle's home in Amherst, Massachusetts on August 3. Jia's relatives picked her up San Francisco International Airport when she arrived from China on August 1 and flew east together. Her father, Bing Jia, an illegal immigrant and faces deportation, although she claims no relatives are in the United States. Both she and her father are now seeking political asylum, according to her lawyer, Shen-Shin Lu. In an interview with political analysts, Markus Feldenkirche (Chicago Tribune, Aug. 15), Jia's asylum case could cause diplomatic tension between China and U.S. "Nobody pf this age ever tried to do this before," said Guy Alito, a professor of Chinese studies at the University of Chicago.
