John B. Tsu named 2001 year of man by World Journal


The Chinese newspaper, World Journal, named John B. Tsu on February 8 as 2001 year of man. Dr. Tsu, born on December 1, 1924, received LL.B. from Imperial University, Tokyo, in 1943, M.A. from Georgetown University in 1949, and Ph.D. from Fordham University in 1953.

A well known educator and political activist, Dr. Tsu served as director, International Studies Institute for Eastern Studies, Seton Hall University (Carnegie Chinese and Japanese Program), 1974-77; special assistant to president, University of San Francisco, 1977-83; and later joined John F. Kennedy University in Japan in 1985 as founder and director of its Asian-Pacific Institute. He was appointed member, President's National Advisory Council on Education for Disadvantaged Children, 1971-73; member, National Advisory Council on Ethnic Heritage Studies, HEW, 1975-80; and in 2001 chair of the President's Advisory Commission of 15 members. The Commission will advise the President, through the Secretary of Health and Human Services, on the three mandates of the Executive Order which created the Commission, to: (1) develop, monitor and coordinate federal efforts to improve Asian American and Pacific Islander participation in government programs; (2) foster research and data collection for Asian American and Pacific Islander populations and sub-populations; and (3) increase public and private sector and community involvement in improving the health and well-being of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
