Flight attendant Betty Ann Ong dialed "8" on an in-plane phone Sept. 11 and told authorities on the ground about the men who had just commandeered her aircraft. The men had stabbed two fellow flight attendants on American Airlines Flight 11, which was then flying low over New York City, Ong said. The hijackers had also slit a passenger's throat, she said. Ms. Ong, 45 and a San Francisco native, posthumously received a Civilian Bravery Award last year for her efforts during the hijacking. She became the first victim aboard a hijacked plane to be identified through DNA samples taken from family members. Ms. Ong's sister, Cathie Ong of Bakersfield, California, told the Boston Globe she had planned on meeting Betty after her ill-fated Boston-Los Angeles flight last September to discuss their upcoming trip to Hawaii.
