Dragon boat races in August

The Chicago's Chinatown chamber of Commerce is co-hosting with the Chicago Tribune the second annual Dragon Board Races on the Chicago River starting at the Ping Tom Memorial Park at 18th Street in Chinatown on August 10, 2002. Midwest U.S. dragon boats seat 18 paddlers (in 9 pairs) plus a drummer and flag catcher. The steersman sits at the stern and controls the boat's direction with an oversized paddle. The Chicago River event is hoping to increase the number of teams from 9 last year to 16 this year.
