Wei Li (Willy) Wang, born in Guangxi Province, China, graduated with honors from Beijing's Central Academy of Fine Arts, is now American citizen and lives in Houston, Texas. Mr. Wang is a premier sculptor and member of the National Sculpture Society in New York. His works include large-than-life horsemen in ht Potala Palace in Tebet, the bust of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the Father of China) at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and bust of Madame Sun at her memorial hall in China. Ms. Cresali A. LaWell in an interview with Mr. Wang praised his works more than striking likeness of the subject. He "captures a bit of the character, nature, and essence of the subjects he portrays." Mr. Wang said: "I want to do the arts that people understand. With reference to the bust of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, one of the board members of the Georgetown University saw the bust of Madame Sun asked her who the artist was. The university later commissioned Wang to do a similar bust of Dr. Sun Yat-sen for the university's permanent collection. According to Mr. Wang, he can do a sculpture in two months, but to understand the subject takes much longer. His work begins with observation. Learning how to look at a subject in real life can give us ideas on how to approach it. (Source: "Wei Li Wang Sculptor" interview by Cresali A. LaWell. U.S.-China Review, Fall 2001).
