The ELM no. 9 special edition on the Three Gorges Dam was released on November 15. Stated Paul H. Tai, ELM editor, "While many in China celebrate the event with jubilation, it is time for the concerned people to take a close look at the expected benefits of the project and also one aspect of the dam that critically affects its future operations -- the silt question.
Hence, we are sending out this special issue of the ELM, in two parts. The first is a summary of the benefits and risk of the project, with Professor Howard Chang offering an expert's analysis and judgment on the project. The second consists of comments, of a technical nature, from three experienced engineers on Chang's opinions, which they have reviewed in advance." For full-text, e-mail to Professor Paul H. The ELM stands for E-Letters in the hope of becoming an E-Magazine. It serves as a media of communication (1) among Chinese-Americans who have retired or are about to and (2) between these Chinese-Americans and any other interested parties. It was created following an experimental period from July 4, 2002 to September 12, 2002, in which six biweekly issues were e-mailed to some 170 readers. Beginning with Issue No. 7 on October 1, 2002 it was changed to a monthly release. The ELM has three purposes: 1. Sharing life experiences, ideas, information, and, above all, fun among friends, including those who are not ethnically Chinese. 2. Preserving the above for the future. 3. Communication with our younger generations (our sons and daughters as well as theirs). Your written contributions--featured articles, comments, announcements, and news items-are invited. You may share ELM issues with your friends and encourage them to become regular readers by sending in their email addresses. However, any reader not wishing to receive future issues will be taken off the distribution list upon notice.
