Asian American Jazz 2000: Chicago


The MCA and Asian American Jazz Festival co-sponsor Asian American Jazz 2000 on October 24-27th.

Thursday, Oct. 24, 8 pm at MCA, 220 E. Chicago Avenue: Festival Concerts and Workshops. Wu Man / Tatsu Aoki World premiere duet featuring the Silk Road Ensemble pipa virtuoso.

Friday, Oct. 25, 8 pm at MCA, 220 E. Chicago Avenue presented with Jazz Institute of Chicago: Jon Jang/David Murray Pianist Jang team up to perform tunes from their new release, The River of Life. Joseph Jarman/Robbie Hunsinger/Tatsu Aoki A new woodwinds and bass trio in a free jazz improv jam.

Saturday, Oct. 26, 11 am Otomo Portable Orchestra Workshop with Festival or SoundField ticket A first in Chicago! Otomo's legendary hands-on demo open to all musicians. Bring a small electronic device.

Saturday, Oct. 26, 8 pm at MCA, 220 E. Chicago Avenue presented with SoundField 2002: Yoshihide Otomo's New Jazz Quintet with special guest Sachiko M Yoshihide Otomo/Ensemble Noamnesia The boundless ensemble performs the world premiere of Otomo's large-scale work. Sunday, Oct. 27, 12 pm Jon Jang Workshop: Two Flowers on a Stem with Festival ticket The composer/pianist traces his distinct musical language, flowing between Chinese and jazz heritages.
