In his official visit to the United States, President Jiang Zeman of the People's Republic of China, arrived in Chicago on October 22, as his first stop. Over 500 people greeted him and protesters staged demonstration at the airport. President Jiang and his party stay at Ritz-Carlton. Hundreds of protesters for Taiwan, Tibet, and Falun Gong massed outside the hotel., but there was no violence. He and his party were dinner guests of Governor Ryan, Mayor Daley and the Council on Foreign Relations. He had brief meetings with Mayor Daley, Governor Ryan and officials of Motorola that announced on October 21 the agreement of worth $446 million to upgrade China's mobile phone networks. Around 9 o'clock in the evening, he met with a group of some 60 Chinese Americans at the hotel. Jiang left for Texas on October 23.
