Second annual dragon boat race on Potomac River


The second annual dragon boat race will be held Sunday, May 24, 2003 in D.C. Eight magnificent dragon boars donated last year by Taiwan enterprises anhd organizaqitons will be used again this yuear. Four boats per heat race aq r500-meter course and a 250-meter course between Key Bridge and Thompson Boat Center. The 2003 Dragon Boat Festival committee has invited mayor Anthony A. Williams, Chairperson Linda Cropp, Representtive C.J. Chjen of Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office, and many other community leaders to the ceremony. The boat race is sponsored by the Chinese Women's League (CWL) of Washington, D.C. Says Ms. Yolanda Chen, CWL Washington, D.C. chairwoman and wife of Taiwan Representative C.J. Chen, "Dragon boat racing began in China more than 2,000 years ago and is popular today in many parts of the world, particularly in Taiwan. It represents history, tradition, culture and more importantly, teamwork and sportsmanship, which is much needed today."
