Chicago events of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month


The Organization of Chinese Americans, Inc., Greater Chicago Chapter (OCA-Chicago) hosts, "The First Event, The Kickoff of 2003 Asian Pacific American Heritage Month" at a press conference and ceremony releasing the 2003 Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Commemorative Bookmark, "The Q Bookmark," honoring Quincy Wong, Pioneer who touched the lives of many," on Thursday, May 1, 2003 at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 East Washington Street, 1st Floor Randolph Cafe, Chicago, from 10:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. OCA-Chicago celebrates the Sixth Anniversary of the Commemorative Bookmark Issue with this year's release. Nancy Loo, morning anchor at FOX Chicago TV, will serve as the ceremony's emcee. (Schedule at end of this release.) "For the sixth year in a row, OCA-Chicago is delighted to partner with community leaders, and with FOX Chicago TV to kick off Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in such a meaningful way," said Don Villar, OCA-Chicago president. Quincy Wong was the top Asian Pacific American male model in the Midwest, when he passed away last July, suddenly, at the age of 48. The commemorative issue celebrates the life of the prolific actor/model/director/writer and producer's ubiquitous career. In honor of Q's firsts, the OCA bookmark will be PURPLE for the first time this year. Venue underwriter is the Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. Project direction is being provided by ENERI Communications, LLC of Chicago. Bookmark design by ENERI/Rieny. Approximately ten thousand bookmarks will be distributed throughout Chicagoland via community outlets, stores, libraries and schools. Bookmarks will also be available at no charge to the public, while supplies last.

The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs presents, "A Tribute to Quincy Wongâ€| Pioneer who touched the lives of many," at the Chicago Cultural on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, from 7 p.m.-8:15 p.m. in the Claudia Cassidy Theater; with a Pre-Show Reception at 6 p.m. in the GAR Rotunda. The reception and program are presented in observance of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. This special tribute, organized by members of the Chicago artist community, honors Quincy Wong. It will feature a viewing of film/video clips produced during the prolific actor/model/director/writer and producer's ubiquitous career, and a live performance program tribute featuring original works by Wong. Currently scheduled to perform are artists: Angel Abcede, Tatsu Aoki, Vivian Chiu, Joe Foronda, Kim Hsieh, Bob Kiser,K.M. Lowe, Yoko Noge, Mia Park, Stephanie Santos, Walter Tambor and Alex Yu. The program will be emceed by Christina January Adachi, president of Angel Island Theatre Company; and Jean Fujiu, executive director of the Japanese American Service Committee, will give remarks on behalf of Asian Pacific American community leadership.
