In the top six markets (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Philadelphia) Becoming American averaged a 2.0 Nielsen rating -- a "very good" showing according to one Los Angeles news director. The three-part series' national average was a 1.5. "In New York, the series got off to a particularly strong start with a 3.0 for the premiere," stated Adina Barnett of Kelly & Salerno Communications in Greenwich, Conn. "[It] averaged a 1.7 over the three nights. In both Los Angeles and San Francisco, the series built each night, culminating in a 3.0 on the third night for L.A. and a 3.5 on the third night in San Francisco."
