Asian Americans fear SARS spreading


Monterey Park, a Los Angeles suburban town, known as Chinese Beverly Hills, has no SARS reported. But, residents are talking and worrying about possible spread of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). Its Mayor David Lau canceled a long-planned trip to Monterey Park's sister city, Quanzhou, China. There has been an increasing number of patients who believe they may have SARS. Reports Calvin Sims, Los Angeles and Santa Clara counties reported seven cases of SARS each. Today, there have been 36 suspected cases of SARS in California. Of those cases, at least 17 traveled to Southeast Asian in recent weeks. States Calvin Sims, passengers who arrive at airports in California from mainland China, Singapore, Hong Kong and Vietnam receive health are served with notice that they may have been exposed to SARS and should monitor their health. In San Francisco Chinatown, pharmacists and health officials have reported a run of face masks and over-the-counter disinfectants. (Source: The New York Times, Apr. 5, 2003)
