The China Institute in New York will hold a seminary on Xu Zhimo, a Chinese Poet, on Saturday, September 27, 2003. Xu Zhimo, or Hsu Chi-muo, (1897-1931) is one of the most distinguished poets of the 20th century China. He was educated at Peking University in China Columbia University in U.S. and Cambridge University in England. For the first time outside of China, the Renwen Society of China Institute and the Chinese Language Teachers' Association of Greater New York are presenting a 5-hour symposium on the life and works of Xu Zhimo, the tumultuous years of social and cultural changes in the 1920's in China. The symposium will be entirely in Chinese. Speakers include Xu Zhimo family member(s); C.T. Hsia, former Professor of Chinese literature at Columbia University; Ch'ou-yu Cheng, Poet-in-Residence, Yale University; Xudong Zhang, Professor of Chinese Literature, New York University; Yao Xuewu, President of Peking University Pen Society; and Hailong Wang, East Asian Dept. Columbia University. Ben Wang, Senior Lecturer at China Institute and Co-chair of the Learned (Renwen) Society will be a moderator.
