FBI recruits Chinese students as informants

An anonymous scholar tells The New York Times that the FBI has been engaged for the last year in "a very strongly renewed effort" to monitor and recruit Chinese students - as part of the agency and the Immigration and Naturalization Service's announced intent "to track all foreign students." The FBI has been approaching students in nuclear physics, aerodynamics, engineering (missiles or space satellite), nanotechnology, and other studies related to supercomputers and encryption. The purpose of the program is to use the student recruits to learn specifics about how the Chinese government is working to obtain technologies useful to the Chinese military in the United States.
