The Examiner, once a flagship of the media empire owned by William Randolph Hearst. has a long history in San Francisco. The first issue of the Examiner was printed in 1865. In 1999, another newspaper, The Chronicle was sold to the Hearst Corp. To comply with antitrust laws, Hearst yielded control of the Examiner to the Fang Family. Reported Jane Meredith Adams (Chicago Tribune, Feb. 26, 2003), Under the Fangs, who publish a free home-delivered San Francisco newspaper called the Independence as well as the successful Asian Week, a news magazine, the paper has made several missteps. The newspaper was riddled with typographical errors and other software errors caused certain letters to appear as odd typographical symbols. On February 21, Ted Fang, the publisher, fired almost the entire staff and stated that the paper now be distributed free.
