Chinese American Librarians Association Northeast Chapter held its annual meeting on May 3 in New York Public Library's Mid Manhattan Library. Two lectures were presented. Dr. Jacqueline M. Newman's topic was: "fruits and vegetables : The Chinese perspective." She also introduced Flavor & Fortune, a unique journal dedicated to the art and science of Chinese cuisine. Dr. Newman, professor emeritus at Queens College, is a lifetime collector of Chinese cookbooks. She donated her collection of 7,000 items valued at $400,000 to Stony Brook University. Her collection is the largest English-language Chinese cookbooks in the world, including 2,626 cookbooks, a large set of herbal medicine books, haute cuisine magazines, archival materials, videos, CD-Roms, and more than 4,000 slides. Mr. Marco Chi-Yuen Liu, editor of World Journal, talked on the history of Chinese newspapers in the United States, with stress on World Journal's development. World Journal's circulation is in the neighborhood of 390,000, the largest Chinese newspaper in North America.
