United Ways APACOC held its annual Bridge reception November 19

United Way's Asian Pacific American Community Outreach Committee (APACOC) held its annual reception November 19 in recognition of the Efroymson Fund grants of $20,000 to Asian Pacific American organizations.

The 2003 Efroymson Fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation grants were made to Asian Human Services, Cambodian Association of Illinois, Chinese American Service League, Chinese Mutual Aid Association, Japanese American Service Committee, Korean American Community Services, Korean American Senior Center, and Vietnamese Association of Illinois.

The Efroymson grant allowed Asian Human Services (AHS) to continue preparations for the first primary health care center in Chicago to target the special needs of immigrant and refugee families. Its grant to Chinese American Service League (CASL) is for the School Age Program which provides cultural retention and cultural exploration activities. The program served 40 children and 27 families. The Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) was awarded the Efroymson Fund grant for the suburban Outreach Project which serves the rabidly growing Chinese community in Chicago's Western suburbs, with a special focus on seniors. Its program includes citizenship classes and case assistance, English classes and tutoring, public benefits assistance, health care workshops, health screening, certified medical interpretation, and promoting the need for qualified medical interpretation among health care provides. Over 800 people are served annually through the program.
