18.7 percent of Asian/Pacific Islanders uninsured

According to the Census Bureau, 43.6 million in U.S. did not have health insurance in 2001, an increase of 2.4 million from 2001. Reports Bruce Japsen, "with job cuts affecting nearly all industries last year, it was only natural that the number of uninsured would rise. Without a surge in hiring, heal benefits expired by many out-of-work Americans. " Of the uninsured by race or ethnicity, White, non Hispanic constitutes 10.7 %, Asian and Pacific Islands 18.7%, Black 20.2% and Hispanic origin, all race 32.4%. By age, a percentage in each age group is as follows: under 18 years 11.6%, 18-24 29.6%, 25-34 24.9%, 35-44 17.7%, 45-64 13.5%, and 65 and over 0.8% (Source: Bruce Japsen, Chicago Tribune, Sept. 30, 2003).
