The Chinese American Museum and the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California
hosted a reception Saturday, August 21 to mark the release of a special edition of the Gum Saan
Journal. Judge Delbert Wong will be present with son and author Marshall Wong for a special
book-signing event on Delbert Wong: First Chinese American Judge
Judge Wong was graduated from Stanford University Law School in 1948. From 1961 to 1982,
he served on the Los Angeles County Superior Court bench and was on the Municipal Court
bench for two years before being elevated. As Los Angeles' Deputy Attorney General for seven
years, he defended tort actions brought against the State and its officers or employees, and he
represented various State departments and agencies. As the California State Deputy Legislative
Counsel, he worked with the California Code Commission in preparing and editing the original
draft of the Public Utilities Code. As an arbitrator, Judge Wong is known to be very meticulous
and thoughtful, and "He takes the time to evaluate the facts." He is highly commended by
medical malpractice, complex construction, and personal injury legal specialists, who regard him
as one of the most intelligent neutrals in the area.
