12 Asian American police officers of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have sued the agency for discrimination. In August 2003, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission found that "highly qualified Asian police officers have repeatedly, over the years, been passed over for numerous promotions to the positions of sergeant."
Most of the plaintiffs have served a decade or more for the Port Authority, which has over 1,600 employees. One, Christian Eng of Hewlett, N.Y., joined the force in 1977.
One plaintiff, David Lim, a 19-year veteran from Lynbrook, N.Y., was credited with rescuing dozens of people from the World Trade Center on 9/11. (Source: AsianWeek, Apr. 22, 2005).
