Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the San Francisco Board of Education meeting Tuesday night, April 12, to call attention to their concerns, including the district's desegregation system and the district's plan to close several schools. They also complained about the district's plan to lay off at least 60 classroom aides.
Board members agreed to schedule a special meeting in May to discuss desegregation issues with the Chinese American parents who want their children to attend neighborhood schools instead of traveling by bus across the city. The board plans to vote on closing from three to five schools at its meeting April 26. (Source: Heather Knight, AsianWeek, Apr. 13, 2005).
