Renowned artist Chi Chen passed away in Shanghai on August 4, 2005. He was 93.
Chen was born in Wuxi, China on May 2, 1912. Before he came to the United States, Chen taught at St. John's University in Shanghai (1942-46). In the United States, Chen was on the faculty of Pennsylvania State University (1959-60), artist in residence, Utah State University (1971). On October 5, 1962, he married Alice Zu Min Huang.
Chen's paintings were exhibited at various museums and art galleries in the United States, including New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, Maine, Florida, Arizona, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Washington, Illinois, Louisiana. Iowa, Texas, Washington, California, Geogia, and Alaska. Works are in permanent collections in Metropolitan Museum of Arts, Butler Institute, Allentown Museum, Charles & Emma Frye Museum, New Britain Museum, Columbus Museum, IBM Corp., Ford Motor Co., General Mills, and numerous museums.
Among his many publications are Watercolors (1942), Chen Chi Paintings (1965), Two or Three Lines from Sketchbooks of Chen Chi (1969), China from the Sketchbooks of Chen Chi (1974), Chen Chi Watercolors, Drawings, Sketches (1980), Chen Chi Watercolors (1981), East Meets West Chen Chi Watercolors (1989).
