SoCAPS forum December 11

The Society of Chinese American Professors and Scientists (SoCAPS) will offer a forum on "A Glass Ceiling for Asian American Scientists?" December 11 at Illinois Institute of Technology, Room 104, Stuart Building, Chicago. It is open to the public.

Inspired by a recent Science Magazine report on the issue of "glass ceiling" for Asian American scientists, SoCAPS organizes this forum for the interest of Asian American scientists on career development. Asian scientists are a major presence in U.S. research labs. So why do so few hold leadership positions? Is there a glass ceiling for Asian scientists? The issue of "glass ceiling" that may prevent Asian scientists from being promoted to senior level or leadership positions is to be discussed from all perspectives. The purpose of such a discussion is to exchange information and experience, increase our awareness in cultural differences, and promote self confidence in working with main stream academic environments.

The forum's keynote speakers are Yi Rao, Professor of Neurology, Northwestern University; Carl K. Chang, Professor and Chair of Computer Science Department, Iowa State University, President of IEEE Computer Society; and Donglu Shi, Professor of Materials Science, University of Cincinnati.

SoCAPS is a nationwide not-for-profit organization of professors and scientists with primary missions in advocating the interests of Chinese American academics, facilitating members'contribution to American society with excellent academic accomplishments, and promoting academic collaboration and information exchange in science, culture, and education.
