Dr. Leroy Chiao and Col Salizhan S. Sharipov conducted a spacewalk January 26 for 5 hours and 28 minutes outside space station to install and remove equipment and inspect the exterior. Warren E. Leary reports, the astronauts, working from a hatch on Russia's Pir docking compartment, moved a Japanese commercial experiment, installed an experimental German robot arm and attached a Russian biomedical experiment near the airlock. This spacewalk is their first of three-and-one-half month mission. Dr. Chiao is the station's American commander and Col. Sharipov of the Russia Air Force is flight engineer.
