House of China presents essay contest awards June 11


The House of China will present essay contest awards at a recognition ceremony during a Dragon Boat Reception on Saturday, June 11, 2005.



Since 1995, the House of China (HOC) has awarded scholarships each year to San Diego

County youths, 18 years of age or younger, currently enrolled in one of five Chinese language schoosl: Chinese School of San Diego, San Diego Chinese Academy, San Diego Yet-Sen Chinese School, SDCCA North County Chinese School, and Hua-Xia. There are three groups: beginner, intermediate and advanced, based on recommendations by teachers.

The HOC is a non-profit cultural and education organization founded in 1935 and is located in Balboa Park. The purpose of the HOC is to preserve, present and promote Chinese culture, friendship and understanding. HOC is open on every Sunday afternoon, and seasonal and special events are held throughout the year.

The late Ms Virginia Hom Fung was a dedicated HOC officer whose passion was Chinese culture and its advancement. The scholarships are awarded in her memory.



The theme of this year's essay contest is Similarities and Differences between Eastern and Western Culture. Students can select any combination of the following subjects: people to people relationship, food, clothing, arts, thinking and other aspects of cultures. Evaluations will be based upon the following criteria:(1) Descriptions of the subject(s); (2) the content and

expressions; and (3). the effect of the differences to you. The 3rd item applies only to the advanced group.



Each winner received award $50, $100, $150, or $200 respectively. Winner's parents, teacher, and a representative from each Chinese school will be guests at the reception. Winner names and pictures will appear in HOC Newsletter, and local newspapers.
