100th year of Chinese cinema celebrated

This year, 2005, has been named the "Chinese Centennial Film Year" by the China Film Archive. The Film Society of Lincoln Center and the College of Statan Island/CUNY present a 3-week retrospective of 100 years of Chinese Cinema, October 21 - November 10.

The three-week series features 34 films from pre-1949 "Shanghai" cinema to films made within the People's Republic of China from 1949 to the present. Films include: Wu Yonggang's Goddess/Shennu (1934) with Ruan Lingyu, Cai Chusheng's New Woman/Xin muxing (1934) with Ruan Lingyu, Sun Yu's The Big Road/Dalu (1934), Yuan Muzhi's Street Angeles/Malutianshi (1937) with Zhao Dan, Fei Mu's Spring in a Small Town/Xiaocheng zhichun (1948), Zheng Junli's Crows and Sparrows/Wuyamaque (1949) with Zhao Dan, Shi Hui's This Life of Mine aka the Life of a Beijing Policeman/Wozhe yibeize (1950), Li Jun's Serfs/Nongnu (1963) , Xie Jin's The Red Detachment of Women/Hongse nianzijun (1961). Chen Kaige's Yellow Earth/Huangtudi (1985), Zhang Yimou's To Live/Huozhe (1994), Ning Ying's On the Beat/Mingjing gushi (1995), Jia Zhangke's Platform / Zhantai (2000), Tian Zhuangzhuang's Springtime in a Small Town/Xiaochen zhichun (2002), Xin Lee's The Master of Everything/Zhiyu zhile (2004), and more.

A free panel discussion will also be held on Saturday, October 22, in conjunction with an international symposium at the College of Staten Island/CUNY (Oct 24-25).

Celebrated directors of international fame will be present for Q & A. Among them are: Xie Jin, Tian Zhuangzhuang, Ning Ying, Li Shanghong, and Jia Zhangke.
