Indigenous Taiwanese protesters outside UN

A group of 60 indigenous Taiwanese protesters led by Ms. Kao-Chin Su-Mei will hold a rally against Japanese wartime atrocities outside the United Nations World Summit in New York on September 16, Kao-Chin Su-Mei is a descendent of the Atayal people and a Taiwanese legislator.

We were treated udely by the Japanese police on June 14 for attempt to protest outside of Tokyo's controversial Yasukuni shrine, Ms Kao-Chin said. The Yasukuni Shinto shrine is dedicated to 2.5 million war dead, including 14 convicted war criminals. The shrine also lists the names of 28,000 Taiwanese and Korean soldiers, many of whom where forced into service under Japanese colonial rule.

An estimated 20,000 Taiwanese aborigines were drafted to fight for Japan during World War Two. Only a third of them returned home. (Source: World News, Sdept. 15, 2005).
