Lei He's remains found in abandoned car trunk


Lei He, 28, a Chinese national from Shanghai who was studying mechanical engineering at Purdue, Lafayette, His wife, Danlei Chen, 28, was also a graduate student in chemical engineering at Purdue. They had been married since May 2001.

In December last year Danlei Chen stabbed his husband and then attempted to kill herself by stabbing herself. Both spent time in the intensive care unit at a Layafayette hospital because of stabling wounds

On August 30, detectives found several bags containing human remains in the trunk of a 1997 Buick Century parked in a municipal garage in Rosemont, Illinois. The car was registered to Lei He and Danlei Chen. The human remains are suspected to be Lei He who died of a gunshot wound to the head. But, the autopsy was unable to confirm his identity.

According to police, Danlei Chen drove to Rosemont with the remains, parked the car in the garage and left the country on a flight from nearby O'Hare International Airport.

Authorities in Indiana issued an arrest warrant for the woman when she did not appear for an August 26 court hearing on attempted-murder charges after she allegedly stabbed her husband during a December domestic dispute. (Source: AP, South Bend Tribune, Sept. 3, 2005)
