Sung Yu at 80

Sung Yu, a prominent former Asian Art Curator, San Diego Museum of Art, 1981 to 1999 and Research Fellow, Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan, 1968 to 1979, passed away at noon on Monday, February 5, 2007 at her LA home. She was 80. She had been battling Poly-cythemia Rubra Vera for most of her life. She became very sick for the past four years and was confined to a wheel chair. She moved to LA to be with her son, Eugene, a computer graphic artist, two years ago. Recently her health seems to be improving and she was able to walk using a walker.

Ms. Sun was born on August 20, 1027. She held a BA. Literature, North Eastern University, China, 1949, MFA, University of Oregon, 1968 , MA in Art History, University of Oregon, 1976.,and Professional Degree in Museum Studies, University of Michigan, 1984.

During her distinguished career as Asian Art Curator at the San Diego Museum of Art, Sung Yu built a reputation as being one of the top curators in the field with her uncanny ability to authenticate art objects backed up by in-depth research, One of her great contributions to the history of arts was her book on selections from The Chinese Collection, The San Diego Museum of Art, in 1999.

She is survived by three children: David Sung, Chengdu, China, Margaret Sung, Portland, Oregon, Eugene Sung, LA and 5 grandchildren.
