U.S. lawmakers introduced legislation February 16 that urges the United States to resume normal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Reported Associated Press, February 16, a sponsor of the legislation, Republican Rep. Tom Tancredo, called that the one China policy outdated. "It's time for the United States to stop living this lie and to formally recognize Taiwan for what it is: An independent and sovereign country," said Tancredo, a strong critic of China and champion of Taiwan. The legislation introduced in the House of Representatives also calls for the United States to support Taiwan's efforts to join the United Nations.
The title of the legislation, H.Con.Res. 73 is "Expressing the sense of Congress that the United States should resume normal diplomatic relations with Taiwan (the Republic of China), and for other purposes." Co-spnsors are: Rep Dan Burton [IN-5], Rep Steve Chabot [OH-1], Rep Marilyn N. Musgrave [CO-4], Rep Dana Rohrabacher [CA-46], Rep Mark E. Souder [IN-3], and Rep Edolphus Towns [NY-10]. The legislation was referred to to House committee.
