San Francisco's mayor is offering a $100,000 reward in the search for the suspects who fatally injured an elderly man at a bus stop. Police say several youths attacked 83-year-old Huan Chen on Jan. 24 as he waited for a bus in the Bayview district to visit his wife in a convalescent home. Witnesses say the youths attacked him from behind, kicked and punched him, then fled laughing. Huan was hospitalized and died nearly two months later.
Mayor Gavin Newsom announced the reward Tuesday April 27 during a City Hall rally calling for an end to the recent spate of seemingly unprovoked attacks against Asian-Americans by African-American youths.
Authorities have said there hasn't been evidence that the recent attacks, which also left another Chinese-American man dead in Oakland, were hate crimes. (Source: Associated Press, Apr 28, 2010).
