Jane Tam first woman in US to lead Confucius Church

Jane Tam, 72, is a Chinese immigrant who opened up several restaurants in Sacramento in 1978. Her community involvement has led her to represent her church, as her husband did before he died. Chuch members told KCRA 3 it was just 10 years ago that women were allowed to join the male-dominated Confucius organization. They see this as a historic moment achieved by hard work and dedication. Tam is best known for revitalizing the Confucius School in Sacramento and teaching children of all backgrounds the Chinese language and culture.

Tam's term as president of the Confucius Church of Sacramento will last one year. She said she may be the first woman in this position but she knows she won't be the last. (Source: PST KCRA.com, Feb 21, 2010).
