Frederick D. Ju


Dr. Frederick D. Ju was born in Shanghai, China on September 21, 1929. He came to the United States to study in 1952 and received a BS degree in mechanical engineering from University of Houston in 1953, a MS degree in mechanical engineering in 1956, and a doctorate in theoretical and applied mechanics in 1958, both from the University of Illinois. He joined the University of New Mexico in 1958 and chaired its Department of Mechanical Engineering twice (1973 and 1989), and was appointed as Presidential Professor in 1985 and Halliburton Professor in 1992. Dr. Ju retired as Presidential and Halliburton Professor Emeritus in 1994.

Frecerick D. Ju

Dr. Ju is a recognized expert on mechanics of deformable solid, dynamics of solid, and tribology. He also served as consultant at Los Alamos National Laboratory, principal investigator with Air Force and Navy, and National Visiting Professor, National Science Council, Taiwan. He received many awards, including Tau Beta Pi Outstanding Teacher Award (1982), College of Engineering Outstanding Researcher Award (1985), Achievement Award of the Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and the Chinese Society for Materials Science, Republic of China (1986), and College of Engineering Outstanding Teacher Award (1988), Fellow, ASME (1984), and Life Fellow, ASME (1994).

Dr. Ju has been very active in his academic and professional field. He served as chair of ASME Western Applied Mechanics Conference (1969), host chair, ASME/ASCE Joint Mechanics Conference (1985), chair, Technical Commission Vibration & Sound, Design Division, ASME, chair, 14th Biennial Conference on Vibration & Noise (1993), chair, Design Engineering Technical Conferences (1993).

Dr. Ju has published over 70 technical papers and is listed in a number of biographies, including Who's Who in Engineering, Who's Who in Frontiers of Science and Technology, Who's Who in the West, and American Men and Women of Science.
