Phylis Lan Lin


Dr. Lin, a native of Taiwan, holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Missouri - Columbia in 1972. Her doctoral theses is entitled "Chiropractor, chiropractic, and process: a study of the sociology an occupation." She taught at Missouri Southeast State University in 1972 and has been teaching at the University of Indianapolis since 1973. Dr. Lin is now Professor of Sociology, Director of Graduate Applied Sociology Program, and Director of Asian Programs at the University of Indianapolis. The Social Work Program at the University of Indianapolis was in gratitude for Dr. Lin's founding of the Social Work Program. The Program was named "The Phyllis Lan Lin Program in Social Work" on April 2, 1997. As a director of Asian Programs, Dr. Lin had organized and planned numerous special art lectures and related cultural events. It was through these cultural activities Dr. Lin intends to bring Asian culture to her campus as well as to communities in Midwest.

Dr. Lin has been doing research in general areas of work stress, and marriage and the family . She has presented many workshops and lectures in Taiwan and Mainland China since 1976. A prolific writer, Dr. Lin is the author and co-author of a number of monographs and books in Chinese and English, including Families: East and West (eds. with others. Indianapolis: University of Indianapolis Press, 1992), Selected Readings on Marriage and the Family: A Global Perspective (eds. With Wen-hui Tsai. Indianapolis: University of Indianapolis Press, 1995), and China (Mainland China and Taiwan): Selected Essays (eds. With David Decker. Indianapolis: University of Indianapolis, 1997).

Active in her profession, Dr. Lin chaired many sessions at professional conferences, and the program chair for the 2000 annual joint conference of three Chinese American Associations in Indiana, the program chair for the 2001 Indiana Council on Family Relations' annual conference. Mayor William H. Hudnut, III proclaimed July 26, 1991 as "Dr. Phyllis Lan Lin Day" in Indianapolis, and called upon all citizens to join him in recognizing her toward strengthening the family unit all over the world through the efforts in organizing the First International Symposium on Families: East and West. She also chaired the second and third symposia. Proceedings of all three symposia were published. She is a member of the Board of directors of International Center of Indianapolis and was elected in 2001 to the "Old Girls'"Club by the Indianapolis Business Journal.
