Dr. Catherine Yi-yu Cho Woo is an internationally known scholar, painter, poet, composer, Feng Shui practitioner, and educator who has made tremendous contributions to the understanding of Chinese philosophy and aesthetics. Dr. Woo studied architecture at the University of Illinois and then completed her both undergraduate and masters degrees from San Diego State University. She received her Ed.D. from University of San Francisco in 1981. Her doctoral thesis deals with the discriminators of Chinese aesthetics as seen in the life and works of Ch's Pai-Shih (1864-1957) and its implications for teaching Chinese art.

Dr. Woo directed the Chinese Language Program, the China Studies Institute, and the Center for Asian Studies at San Diego State University. Her paintings have been shown in numerous museums and galleries in Asia and the United States, including the United Nations, the Sackler Museum at Harvard University, and the National Gallery in Taipei. She has lectured extensively at universities around the world including Yale, Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Duke, and University of California at Berkeley, as well as the United Nations and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Dr. Woo was the recipient of many awards, including San Diego State's 1988-1989 University Outstanding Professor Award, the 1990-1991 University Research Lecturer, and the coveted National Scholastic Honorary Society's award. She was a Beta Kappa Lecturer (1995-1996), and served for six years as a Commissioner for Arts and Culture for the City of San Diego and a member of the National Council on the Arts from 1991-1996. In 1997 she was honored as the Humanitarian of the Year by the National Conference (of Christians and Jews).
