Dr. Luke C. L. Yuan died on February 11, 2003 in Beijing. He was born on April 5, 1912 as a grand son of Yuan Shih-kai (1859-1916; President of China, 1912-1916). Dr. Yuan received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Yenching University in 1932 and 1943 respectively and a doctorate from California Institute of Technology in 1936. He worked as assistant, Yenching University (1932-1934), assistant, California Institute of Technology (1937-1940), research fellow, California Institute of Technology (1940-1942), research physicist, RCA Laboratory; research associate, Princeton Unviersity (1942-1946); research physicist, RCA Laboratory (1942-1946); research associate, Princeton University (1946-1949); Sr. physicist, Brookhaven National Laboratory Upton (1949-1982); and consulatnat (1982-1987). After he retired in 1979, he helped found and became chairman, Board of Directors, Synchrotron Radiation Research Center, Hsinchu, Taiwan 1983-2003) and Chief Coordinator, Feasibility Study of a Prototype of a Superconducting Micrsophere Camera for Energy Determination of a Charged Partical by Transition Radiation(R. O. C. and France)

Luke C.L. Yuan Dr. Yuan received many awards and honors, including Geggenheim Fellow (1958); Science Achievement Medal, R.O.C. Dr. Yuan married to Dr. Chien-hsiung Wu, also a renowned physicist who died in 1997.
